![]() Although the squelching of Denethor eating continues, as the classic sombre music for Lord of the Rings begins to play, with Pippen and Gandalf both looking grave. When the song ends, with the word fade, we hear no more sounds from the battle and get the impression all of the soldiers have been killed. All of the sounds are building up suspense with the non-diegetic high pitched strings in the background, this all comes to a stop after we hear the bow strings release. The nearer the battle gets, the more the sounds blend so that we hear the singing, the hoof beats and Steward eating along with the bow strings of the orcs tightening. We hear Denethor again eating still, although he is not ignorant of the battle (as he ordered them to go) he seems ignorant about the likelihood that the soldiers his own son included will most likely die. The song sounds haunting here and makes it clear that the battle is hopeless, and the soldiers will lose. In the next shot we see and hear the horse hooves of the soldiers as they go to battle, however Pippin’s singing continues and is now non-diegetic. Pippin’s soft singing contrasts with this as it is soft and this makes the viewer feel sorry for Pippin. ![]() Billy Boyd actually wrote the song himself, with a one-day time limit The song is rightly called 'Pippins Song. While Pippin appears to consider singing we hear Denethors eating, which is made much louder, the diegetic sound fills the silence, making the viewer feel disgust and discomfort towards the Stewart who appears greedy. Pippin sang to Denethor a song sung by hobbits of the Shire. ![]() ![]() In this scene in Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King, Pippin sings for the Steward of Gondor, while Faramir instructed by his father- the Steward is leading a group of soldiers to attempt to take back Osgiliath, from Orcs.Īs the Steward orders Pippin to sing, both of their voices can be heard echoing in the hall which gives an impression of the grandeur of the setting.
